Today, information is at the heart of every organisation, and your data is mission critical in keeping your business running. To understand how important this information is, we have put together some key questions to ask, which demonstrate the importance of protecting your data.
Question 1: If you went to your office and could not access any information, what could you no longer do?
In our experience, most people will initially identify a small number of tasks that they would not be able to do – possibly emailing contacts and accessing documents or spreadsheets to work on. However, with a bit more thought and encouragement, this list of actions grows. If your business lost ALL of its data, would you be able to continue invoicing your customers? Accessing online bank accounts? Making supplier payments? Running payroll? Tracking customer enquiries or support calls? Following up with sales enquiries? Running financial and business reports? Accessing your insurance policy? Would your company still comply with Data protection and other legislation? Even, could you access your customer phone numbers to let them know you have experienced a data loss?
Question 2: How long would it take you to get back to the point before you lost it?
Once the data is lost, how will you get it back? How much is backed up? When was the last backup done? Will staff have to re-enter data and how long will this take? And ultimately, would you ever be able to fully get back to the point at which you lost it?
Question 3: Could you continue to trade if you do not have access to your business data and how much would that cost?
Without your data, would you be able to resume operations? What would be the cost to your business for every hour that you cannot access your data? Do you rely solely on insurance to bail you out of a disaster and how long would it be before you’d recouped your costs?
There are some very sobering statistics to think about – 80% of businesses suffering a major disaster go out of business within three years, whilst 40% of businesses that experience a critical IT failure go out of business within one year (Source: Strathclyde Emergencies Co-ordination Group, UK 2015).
When it comes to disasters, some people think “it will never happen to me”. Hopefully they are right, however, we think you will agree that simply hoping that nothing bad will happen is not a great strategy for protecting your business.
