If you are an IBM customer, you must have heard about IBM License Metric Tool, or “ILMT”. ILMT helps customers to determine their full- and sub-capacity licensing requirements, and Is a requirement if you want to run IBM software based on sub-capacity licensing rules.
Many articles have been written, you can find them everywhere on the web, to tell you how important it is to have ILMT installed, to prevent finding yourself in a big non-compliance situation when IBM starts an audit on you.
But why do we call ILMT the most expensive free tool in the world? Yes, the tool is free of charge when you are an IBM customer, you can download it from IBM’s Passport Advantage website. And why could it be so expensive?
We have engaged with many clients that were absolutely confident about meeting all of IBM’s requirements for sub-capacity licensing, because of the fact they had ILMT installed. But there is more than just install the tool. It requires active management, good governance and discipline to make sure ILMT does what it really needs to do.
